At one point in time, I did not like walnuts. That can sound strange for a squirrel, but I did not like them one bit.
They were hard to crack open and the shape of the nut was just ugly. No! No ugly walnut for me. It probably tastes as bad as it looks.
Mom and dad always tried to convince me saying how good it is but I thought they were just trying to trick me.
Then, on a sunny day, we went to visit grandma and grandpa. And can you believe it, all they had for lunch were walnuts!
Of course I said no and refused to eat, stomping my paw and raising my tail.
And then I heard grandma: “Have you ever tried it?”
I did not expect that question. No one asked me that before. After a while, the only thing I could answer is: “No”
She replied: So how can you be sure that you do not like it if you have not tried it?
Me: “Because it looks so ugly compared to the acorn!”
Grandma: Look and taste are two totally different things. I tell you what. Try it at least once. If you don’t like it, neither your parents, nor me or grandpa will ever ask you about eating walnuts again.
After a while, I gave in and accepted. I took the walnut, broke off a piece and started chewing.
Oh boy! Such exciting taste and flavor. I could not believe it but I also could not stop eating. And while I was busy devouring the next walnut, everyone was laughing.
So remember, try it at least once!
